The Matrix reviewed . Relationships in the 2001 Census

Steve Smallwood, Office for National Statistics, UK
Oliver Duke-Williams, University of Leeds

This presentation will review the operation of the relationship matrix used in the 2001 British census, focusing particularly on its operation in England and Wales. It builds on work carried out by Oliver Duke-Williams and John Haskey in examining the linked 2001 Census data in the Longitudinal Study. Some results from the matrix on topics such as extended families within households will be presented. Issues of design, quality and accuracy in using such a matrix will be considered.
